Blepharoplasty

Our eyes are the most important feature of our face and their beauty can be greatly reduced by excess skin creases and eye bags.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, removes fatty tissue and tightens aging skin around the eyes. One of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures, blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid to tighten drooping skin, on the bottom eyelid to correct bags, or on both at the same time. Blepharoplasty will not reverse the appearance of wrinkles or crow's feet.

Heredity is often an important factor where young or middle aged patients may exhibit changes that they look tired, or worse, that they must be leading a strenuous alcoholic night life.
Exposure to sunlight, or ultra violet rays is also damaging to eyelids, both due to direct effect of the rays and over-active muscles from frequent squinting. Normal ageing process involves the stretching of the eyelid skin which results in excess folds and wrinkles, and the sagging of the fat around the eye itself which appears as bulges in the upper and lower lids. During your consultation you will be asked a general medical history, together with the details of any previous eyelid surgery.

You will certainly be asked about the possible thyroid, or kidney disease, as these can cause swelling of the eyelids. Slight differences in facial symmetry are normal and will be pointed out (as they are often unnoticed by the patient). The surgeon will then describe the position of the scars and indicate the likely post operative results. It is important that the patient realises that it is never possible to eradicate all eyelid creases, for to do so would invariably produce and over correction, that is a staring appearance of the eye due to excess tension of the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty usually takes between one and three hours and is ordinarily performed under local anesthetic and oral or intravenous sedation, though some patients desire or require a general anesthetic. Blepharoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in your doctor's office or surgical suite.

Some doctors offer CO2 laser technology as an option for Blepharoplasty. The advantages of this technology over traditional blepharoplasty include less bruising and a quicker recovery time.

To be a candidate for blepharoplasty you should be at least 18, excepting circumstances of medical necessity such as vision impairment. Most patients are dissatisfied with excess skin above their eyes or bags below them, and complain of looking "tired." Blepharoplasty will not decrease wrinkles or facial folds, but is often combined with procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and others to create a full facial rejuvenation.
